About the book

Piper wrote this book after discovering, through Jonathan Edwards and C. S. Lewis, that the desire for happiness is not an enemy of holiness but its rightful engine when aimed at God himself. From this comes his central idea of "Christian Hedonism," summarized in the phrase: "God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him."

The book traces this conviction through worship, prayer, money, marriage, and missions, showing how every area of the Christian life changes once joy in God is understood as itself an act of obedience.

Reviews

The healthy biblical realism of this study in Christian motivation comes as a breath of fresh air. Jonathan Edwards, whose ghost walks through most of Piper's pages, would be delighted with his disciple.
